"Location 3: Old sand pits in the Neeß parcel
The parcel of land Neeß, into which we climbed, belongs geologically to the
Deposits of the Rhätolias, which are very unproductive for agriculture
are and therefore in the past mainly associated with lean pine forests
which were passed. The only "riches" are the sand deposits,
which have been exploited in several sand pits since the 1960s.
This mining activity causes "wounds in the landscape", i.e. after
When mining is complete, the surface looks like a "moonscape".
The dismantling companies are obliged to carry out a renaturation
to operate the areas through backfilling and afforestation.
A (meanwhile abandoned) sand mining area in the corridor
piece Neeß (Brendel and Pross). The ones with little vegetation
and hilly surface awaits renaturation."
