Around 1500, in order to be able to drain the water that accumulated in the ever greater depths of mining, a drainage tunnel over 40 kilometers long, the Markus Semmler tunnel, was driven into the rock, starting under the entire Schlema valley to Schneeberg and Neustädtel.
Every Saturday and Sunday, hobby miners are given the opportunity to experience old and modern Schlema mining up close, from its origins to the Wismut period, at original locations 50 meters below the surface.
