St. Petri is the Evangelical-Lutheran inner-city church built around 1721 in Melle. It is centrally located on the market square opposite the town hall and is the main evangelical church of the church district of Melle-Georgsmarienhütte in Grönegau.

Due to the Capitulatio perpetua, the Catholics living in Melle were awarded St. Matthew's Church, which had previously been used simultaneously. In 1652, a new place of worship was built for the Protestant community, the St. Peter's Church, located close to the Catholic Church.

As early as 1721, immediately after the town fire, construction work began on a new, larger church building, which was inaugurated in 1723 and was completed with the complete inventory by 1724. The then Osnabrück Prince-Bishop Ernst August II of Brunswick-Lüneburg particularly supported the construction. The stonemason and master bricklayer Hermann Schmidinger from Herford played a key role in the new building. The first Protestant pastor at St. Petri was Pastor Anton Seumenicht, who had previously worked at the Catholic St. Matthew Church in Meller.

St. Petri is one of the two town churches that shape the center of Melle's cityscape.

The sacred building was built as a three-aisled Gothic-style baroque hall church with a square west tower and a recessed polygonal choir in 1721 - 24 according to the designs of the Herford master builder Hermann Schmiedinger.
