Reasoning description Rijksdienst voor de Monumentenzorg

Saint Michael's Church, built 1659-1661 as a monastery church for the Dominicans. Baroque facade with great relief. Baroque high altar XVIIIa, pulpit 1668. Paneling with confessionals, XVII B. Organ case in two parts on either side of the window, ca. 1760. Bell chair with clock by F. van Trier, 1649, diam. 52 cm. (Date: 19-07-1967).

The St. Michael or Paterskerk was built by the Dominican Fathers between 1659 and 1668 on the site of the St. Catharinagasthuis. The church is built in the South Holland baroque style. Inside, the imposing baroque main altar (unique in the Netherlands) and the richly carved oak paneling along the entire length of both side walls are striking. The visual arts in the church are entirely in the service of the Catholic Reformation.
The small stone lion next to the front door commemorates the event from 1938. Two lions escaped from a circus in the market square during high mass on St. Rosa Sunday. The lion Azor quietly walked into the crowded church and snuggled up to the altar.
