The Janus Fountain takes its name from the Roman god Janus, whose two heads can be seen at the top of the column. The figures at the foot of the column are intended to symbolize the togetherness of town and country. This symbolic character can be transferred very well to the "Fountain" route, since the fountain route leading through the city center can be supplemented by the "Forest and Water" route. This is how you get out of the city and into the blossoming nature of Kleve.

"For someone forgotten, he is astonishingly present in our time: Janus (actually, Ianus), the Roman god with two faces, one of which looks backward. January, the first month of the year, is named after him – it was under his sign, as was the first day of each subsequent month. Hardly anyone thinks of him anymore when they hear the word "January." Few are also aware that the custom of wishing each other luck on New Year's Day dates back to ancient Rome, as is the Roman-Latin origin of our month names. At most, expressions like "Janus head" or "Janus face" and the corresponding adjectives are still in use to vividly express the ambivalence of a thing or a person.

Janus was the god of gates and doors, of entrances and exits, and presided over beginnings and ends. His two-faced countenance was depicted on many bronze coins, the so-called Janusasses, which date from the time of the Republic but were also in circulation under the Emperors. He had several sanctuaries in Rome, each of which was characterized by its doors or archways. The most important, a gateway usually referred to as the sanctuary of Janus Gemini (the double Janus) or the "porta Ianualis" (January Gate), stood in the Roman Forum. The building housed a statue of the god which, according to Pliny, was 2.20 meters tall (cf. Simon, p. 88) and whose faces faced east and west. When his doors, the "geminae belli portae" (double doors of war), were open, there was war; when they were closed, there was peace throughout the Roman Empire. The latter was extremely rare – after the Roman victory over Carthage in the First Punic War in 235 BC, there was only one gate. 31 BC, after the victory of Octavian, the future Emperor Augustus, over his rival Antony in the naval Battle of Actium in 31 BC, and then a few more times during the reign of Augustus and later emperors..."
