In 1562, a high school was built in Innsbruck by the Jesuits. Financed by a special tax on the Haller salt, was founded on 15 October 1669 by Emperor Leopold I based on a full university with four faculties, including 1671/72 the juridical and 1674/75 the medical faculty. On 29 November 1781 by Joseph II reduced again to a lyceum, was carried out in 1826, the re-establishment of the University of Innsbruck by Emperor Franz I. In honor of both founding fathers, the University of Innsbruck leads the name Leopold Franzens University of Innsbruck.
