    This is a fantastic 7.5km return bike ride along the Cheshire side of the Dee Estuary. It follows the National Cycle Network route number 568, running from Hawarden Bridge near the Deeside Industrial Estate all the way to Neston, Cheshire, on the Wirral peninsula. It’s not just for cyclists though, the cycle path is for pedestrians too and would be fantastic for prams, so I’ll include this post in the walks section too.
    On a clear day the views across the marshes and estuary towards North Wales are beautiful.

    Once upon a time the River Dee ran right up alongside the shores of Burton up to Parkgate. As shipping access to the city of Chester became impossible because of the silting of its port, quays were built in the early seventeenth century (although it’s suspected that quays existed here since medieval times) at Burton and Neston to serve as outports for the city. As they became victims of silting themselves, a further port was built at Parkgate. Between them they functioned as trading ports.

      The beginning of one of the best cyclways in Wirral/Chester. The short section of boardwalk takes you towards a few connecting roads in the Deeside Industrial estate and on to Hawarden railway bridge where you can carry on into Flintshire or bear left along the River Dee all the way to Chester on pristine smooth tarmac.

        If you're going towards Chester, just remember. Loads of "Steelwork" on this stretch. What a pain. Check the wind direction first. It can be a bit "difficult" if it's in your face.

          Keep those wheels straight on the cattle grid at the end of the boardwalk and watch out when icy.

            As stated this stretch can be windy however you have fantastic far reaching big sky views plus this is the start of a fantastic Sustrans route along the Chester Millennium Greenway which is both super easy & takes you through the Centre of Chester but you wouldn't know it. Dropping you off on the leafy lanes around Mickle Trafford & conveniently close to Meadow Lea Farm Cafe (very cycle friendly with cycle racks to park your bike)

              Fantastic sights to be had of the autumn migration from Burtonmarsh RSPB site in Puddington. Chevron of Geese & all manner of other birds starting off to sunnier climes. The seasons are a changing as Bob Dylan once sang!

                        Nice flat ride for lazy people. I did turn around and go back via Blacon, so this is basically the Dee Round souped up. I’m a rookie rider, so will beef up my trips as I go along. The boardwalk is where I took the artistically over inflated photo from 😳).
