Vierrademühle

The history of the Neubrandenburg mills can be traced back to the 13th century. In front of the Treptower Tor, directly on federal highway 104, there is a multi-story brick building with a half-timbered extension. This is the oldest grain mill in the city, the Vierrademühle. The mill was first mentioned in a document in 1271, shortly after the city was founded.

It was built by a son of the city's founder Herbord von Raven, as the simple line of text on the central structure of this historic building still reminds us today: "Müller Bernhard, son of Herbord, founded this mill in 1287". With the construction of the Vierrademühle, the Tollensesee was dammed by around one meter. The original drain at the northern end of Lake Tollense was closed and the Oberbach was created as an 860 meter long canal. The water now flowing over the Oberbach was used to drive the four wooden wheels of the mill. The mill owes its name to these 4 water wheels. In the 18th century, the mill soon developed into one of the largest mills in Mecklenburg. It has been electrically operated since 1925. The Vierrademühle survived all the turmoil and twists and turns of modern times.

Today the historic building is open to Neubrandenburgers and guests. A diverse experience area invites you to linger. Gastronomic and cultural establishments have found their place within the historic walls. Areas of services, housing and training were also allowed into the ensemble of listed buildings.
