The dunes between Walldorf and Sandhausen are part of the inland dunes, a special feature of the northern Upper Rhine plain.

The dune range south of Sandhausen was released for sand mining in the 1970s; mining was not stopped until 1980. The Zugmantel-Bandholz area essentially comprises the site of the former sand pit.

Zugmantel-Bandholz is a 17 hectare nature reserve in the area of the municipality of Sandhausen (Rhein-Neckar-Kreis). It is located southeast of Sandhausen in the "Bandholz" community forest on the eastern edge of Schwetzinger Hardt in the Hardtebenen natural area.

This nature reserve is a former sand pit, which was put under protection after the settlement of rare plants and animals. It is characterized by a mixture of water areas, forested areas and open sand grass with drought-loving plants. Here is also part of the dune train, which extends from Oftersheim via Sandhausen to Walldorf.

In the sand pit you must not. Still worthwhile, if you are in the vicinity. Even outside the pit, you can leave the kids ever to the shovel. We found a great pirate treasure here ;-)
