From 1966 to 1992 - almost 30 years - US battlefield weapons were stored in this facility and guarded by US units. It sounds harmless at first, but it is not when you consider that these were tactical, nuclear artillery shells (combat weapons) that would have been fired at Soviet soldiers from German soil using German rockets in the event of war. In addition to many deaths, entire areas of the country would have been contaminated by nuclear weapons. As long as the facility was active, it was guarded exclusively by US teams; German soldiers only had very limited access.
The end of the Cold War led to the dismantling of the facility. Now the area around the facility has become a local recreation area, and the bunkers themselves are an accessible attraction that also attracts numerous graffiti sprayers.
