The abbey was founded in the 7th century by Saint Aubertus and received the relics of Saint Vedastus, the first bishop of Arras. In 1746, Cardinal de Rohan had it remodeled in a sober style. the abbey fell out of use during the French Revolution and was restored in 1918. Behind the entrance gate, surmounted by the abbey's coat of arms, is a beautiful forecourt.
The abbey now houses the Musée des Beaux-Arts.

Saint-Vaast Abbey was a Benedictine monastery founded in 667 on the hill of La Madeleine near Arras, where the future Saint Vaast used to retire. It is around it that the village grows on the banks of the Crinchon. Saint-Vaast Abbey founded one of the first three colleges of the University of Douai in 1619.

After the buildings were confiscated and deconsecrated during the Revolution, the immense 18th-century abbey church became the new Notre-Dame-et-Saint-Vaast d'Arras cathedral in 1804, replacing the old Gothic Notre-Dame cathedral. -Dame-en-Cité from the west of the city, which was destroyed[1]. Since 1825, the vast convent buildings of the abbey have housed the Arras Museum of Fine Arts.
