In 1897 the Rheindürkheim half of the river was designated as a fairway for the large Rhine ships. Therefore, the ferry could only lie on the Nordheim side during the night. For the ferryman, this had the disadvantage that he had to row the boat across the Rhine back to Rheindürkheim at the start and at the end of duty. That was particularly difficult in winter and sometimes he stayed in the simple shelters for the ferry passengers. In the long run that was not a condition. That is why the Hessian state government commissioned the ferry tower as an official residence for the ferryman in 1901. The tower was built with Neckar stones by master builder Michael Dennier from Rheindürkheim based on neo-Romanesque style elements. The bedroom was upstairs, the living room in the middle and the kitchen in the basement, which also served as a lounge for the ferry passengers in bad weather. The Nordheim Home History Association took over the ferry tower in 2014 and set up an exhibition on navigation on the Rhine and ferry services inside.

The municipality of Biblis has handed over the ferry tower on the Rhine dike, which was originally built in 1901 as accommodation for the ferryman, to the Nordheim local history and history association. He has big plans for the tower: the building, which has been inaccessible to the public for decades, will now be accessible to everyone thanks to private sponsors. The local history and history association is planning an exhibition about the history of ferry and Rhine shipping with exciting lectures and hands-on activities about gold panning in the Rhine and the search for remains of the Rhine crossing that was formerly used for military purposes during the Second World War. Günter Mössinger, chairman of the Nordheim local history and history association, is confident that the ferry tower will soon regularly attract children, young people and adults.
