In May 1952, the GDR built a 5km deep "protection and control strip" along the zone border with the Federal Republic, which interrupted the connection between the two German states. Since 1961, 191 people have fallen victim to the "shoot to kill" order on this inner-German border. It was repealed on November 12, 1989 by the government of the collapsing GDR.
