This is the former Finsterwalde special weapons depot. Nuclear free-fall bombs were kept there for the fighter-bombers stationed in Finsterwalde. It was built between 1961 and 1964 and has an area of about 70 m x 10 m. The complex has now been largely destroyed by vandalism and arson.
Very close to the former GSSD Finsterwalde airfield is a former special weapons depot of the BASALT type for nuclear bomber ammunition. This is a Soviet reuse project; two other storage bunkers of this type are located at Brand airfield and Lärz airfield. Other buildings can be found in the former Warsaw Treaty states. The structure was located in a well-secured barracks area.
The structure itself consists of 2 parts, the technical head building and the 9 m x 40 m storage room. The exact thickness of the ceiling is not known, but with earth covered it measures almost exactly 1.50 m. The thickness of the surrounding walls is also not known, but the gable wall at the front measures 1 m, and the wall between the technical building and the storage room is another almost 1 m. Overall structure dimensions almost 70 m x 9 m. The technical head construction included all technical systems such as LTA, ELT and refrigeration. An external unit was used as the NEA. The approximately 45 cm thick locking gates on the vehicle entrance and in front of the storage room are impressive. There is a 6 m high transshipment room with a crane between the storage room and the technical head building. Next to the car entrance there is a small entrance for people; between the two hydraulically driven locking gates there were originally two thin-walled pressure gates, which also had a "door in door" construction so that people could pass through without opening the large gates . There is an interesting breaking point at the end of the storage chamber, some speculate that this is there because it is a type structure and the head structure could have been placed on either side. However, this is highly unlikely for a monolithic structure. We ourselves are speculating about an “emergency access”, which means that if the main gate was buried, access to the explosive stored goods could still have been created using field tools.
