At the corner of the court arbor of the town hall stands the Roland from 1525 in a true-to-original copy from 1974. Like most Rolande, the Stendaler is depicted as a knight. He wears a grooved armor from the Renaissance, the shape and decorative elements of which corresponded to the fashion of the time. His attributes include a sword, a symbol of power, in the right hand and a shield in the left hand. The shield shows the complete Brandenburg eagle and two jagged squares, probably an older city coat of arms. On his head the Roland wears a package with a plume behind it. The support beam, against which the Roland leans, reveals two figures on its front: a man standing on a conch shell who is lifting a column and thus seems to be supporting the Roland. He wears a smock that is held together by a belt - the work clothes of the craftsmen of the time. It could therefore be the self-portrayal of the master who created the Roland. The illustration below shows a crouching figure that is badly weathered and can no longer be interpreted.

On the back of the roland there is the year 1525 and a fool figure in which the Stendal people see the Eulenspiegel. He stops in the

the bagpipes on the right hand and the city coat of arms in the left hand: a split shield, in front the half Brandenburg eagle, in the back four diamonds.

The coats of arms mentioned on the already mentioned carved wall in the town hall thus appear again on the Roland statue.

Rolande are medieval legal symbols that stood on their marketplaces as symbols of the rights and freedoms of the cities. It is not known whether the Stendal Roland from 1525 was preceded by an older one, but cannot be ruled out.
