After the outdoor pool was closed, the Weiherpark in the North Rhine-Westphalian municipality was left to its own devices - a barely used and difficult to access wasteland with dilapidated buildings was created near the center. A park is now being built at the confluence of the Ahr and Giesenbach that blends into the landscape and connects Blankenheim with the surrounding nature. The vision: a spacious, species-rich valley landscape in the immediate vicinity of the center.
The Weiherpark was rebuilt and redesigned over decades
After the swimming pool was closed in 2015, it remained largely unused; only the swan pond in the middle of the park was still accessible
The ideas and wishes of the citizens were incorporated into the plans for the redesign
Existing and unused facilities are being dismantled and greened; the subsequently modelled terrain will connect to the neighbouring valleys - nature will come directly into the town
The renaturalised Weiherpark will be accessible and experienceable without barriers
Thanks to the exposure of the Giesenbach, its confluence with the Ahr will become an integral part of the park, and a connection will be created to the Ahr source in the middle of the nearby historic town centre.
