The foundation of the church dates back to 1509 by the Dominicans. A convent (now defunct) was built simultaneously next to the church, which was subsequently expanded in the 1600s. Although the damage sustained by the complex from the 1693 earthquake is not known in detail, the presence of a large walled portal in the shared wall of the church, duplication of other elements (such as other walled openings), presumably the church not everything collapsed, but just repaired and structured. In fact, both the facade and the interior were renewed (or at least heavily restored) in the 18th century, with the construction behind the apse (in 1727) of an oratory used as the seat of the Dominican brotherhood.

The church and monastery underwent major transformations in the 20th century. In the 1920s, much of the oratory was demolished to create the avenue, in the gardens, connecting the Church of San Vincenzo Ferreri to the Church of San Giacomo.
