Here you cycle through fertile marshland, where many birds also feel at home. Incidentally, the oil road got its name because oil was found here in the 1950s during drilling at a depth of 1,600 meters and was actually pumped for a while - an old oil pump reminds us of this.

From oil to a bird paradise
On Friday I cycled through Varel to the Wesermarsch district. In the town of Jade there is an old oil field where oil was extracted from 1957 to 1993. Today, all that remains is a street called "Ölstraße" and an old oil pump.
It is now a place where nature can recover. For example, dogs are not allowed and many migratory birds meet here to fly south together.
