In the town center of Ummerstadt, time seems to have stood still for centuries. Development stagnated for several decades, particularly after the Second World War, which is why the town, consisting almost entirely of half-timbered houses, now has just over 500 inhabitants. This makes it one of the smallest towns in Germany. The reason for this was that the town, first mentioned in 837 or 838, lies in the outermost corner of Thuringia and is surrounded on three sides by the state of Bavaria. During the GDR era, Ummerstadt was therefore a disruptive spot in the restricted area of the GDR border. Forced resettlement and emigration caused the town to lose almost half of its population within four decades. The positive aspect, however, was that everything was preserved in its original condition and could thus be renovated in an exemplary manner after reunification.
