"The Jülich Citadel is one of the oldest and best preserved fortifications of its kind north of the Alps. It was built in the middle of the 16th century after the devastating fire of 1547 made it necessary to rebuild the city. The almost square fortress has a side length of about 300 meters from bastion to bastion and is on average about 12.5 meters high. The mighty walls between the bastions are between 35 and 45 meters thick. Two tunnels through the ramparts in the south and north, the posterns, provide access to the fortress.
