The natural path of the Muga River runs along the left bank of this river course, linking the historic center of Castelló d'Empúries with the urbanization of Empuriabrava. Its route reaches a total of 5 km, and it is suitable to go on foot or by any means as long as it is not motorized. In this sense, the greenway is structured on two levels that allow the segregated passage of bicycles and pedestrians - on one side as well as horses - on the other.
One of the main characteristics of this itinerary is that it allows you to contemplate the river banks and the bed of the Muga up close, enjoying and observing in a privileged way everything that life in the river and its associated ecosystems represents: the islands and sandy areas where the birds stop, the riverside forests dominated by willows, ashes, alders, poplars and poplars, the fauna that uses the river course as a corridor to move...
Halfway through, a wooden bridge that crosses the Muga allows us to access the interior of the 'Aiguamolls' Natural Park. There, next to the Empuriabrava treatment plant, we find the Europa pond, with different observatories that invite us to see the birdlife up close. If we follow that route, the path will lead us to Cortalet, the information center for the protected area and from where various itineraries of great interest begin for observing the landscape, flora and fauna.
The last 2.5 km of the route before reaching the sea are done next to the urbanization of Empuriabrava, where special care has been taken to incorporate native wooded vegetation typical of the riverside spaces into its margins. This is how two very different but complementary realities of the Costa Brava end up being linked in a playful way. On the one hand, the historic and traditional centers, and on the other, the more recently created recreational and residential spaces.
