The church is also aptly known as the "Erfatal Cathedral" in the local vernacular. The church was rebuilt in the neo-Romanesque style at the end of the 19th century to replace the previous Gothic building. The local pastor at the time, Stephan, knew how to motivate the population to build the new church. The residents of Hardheim provided free labor to keep the church construction as inexpensive as possible. Nevertheless, 400,000 RM was far beyond the financial capacity of the parish. The church was consecrated in 1899 after eight years of construction. The remaining debts of 230,000 RM had to be paid off by Hardheim residents over the next few years. The interior work therefore did not begin until 1912. The baldachin altar and the mosaics inside are particularly worth seeing. The latter were only created in 1992 as one of the last works of art by the Munich artist Franz Xaver Wilfried Braunmiller and were added to the church.
