Kastro is the oldest settlement on the island of Thassos and is located 10 km inland at an altitude of 500 m.
The settlement was first mentioned in 1434 in connection with the construction of a fortress (acropolis) there.
During the centuries of pirate raids, Kastro became one of the places of refuge in the interior of the island for the population from the coastal settlements.
For a long time it was then an abandoned ruined village, meanwhile some houses have been rebuilt and inhabited.
