The isothermal sphere laboratories, also known as thermoconstant sphere laboratories and popularly known as Adlershofer Busen or Akademiebusen in Berlin, were built from 1959 to 1961 for the Institute of Physical Chemistry of the German Academy of Sciences. The idea came from Peter Adolf Thiessen, the founder and director of the Institute of Physical Chemistry of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR from 1956 to 1964. The architect of the sphere laboratories was Horst Welser, director of the planning staff of numerous other objects on the grounds of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR.

"The spherical laboratories are the first examples of reinforced concrete shell constructions in the GDR and were built by the Institute for Physical Chemistry of the then German Academy of Sciences.
In 1961, when the facility was put into operation, thermoconstant laboratories were a novelty in Germany. Precision measurements in the field of materials technology, among other things, were to be carried out here without temperature fluctuations. The aim was to create two measuring rooms with long-term temperature constancy for basic research in the field of thermodynamics. The results were intended for aerospace.
The spherical laboratories, which were innovative at the time, are now listed as historical monuments."
