It is believed that the first wooden church was built around 1484 by the Maišiagala parish priest Jurgis Paulavičius. The parish was founded in 1503. In 1507, Sigismund the Elder allowed a tavern to be set up in Paberžė, the proceeds of which would be used for the upkeep of the church. In the years 1650-1700 monks lived in Paberžė - regular penitential canons. A parish school was attached to the church. By 1676 a new church was built. In 1759 a wooden church was built and in 1793 it was rebuilt again.
In 1859 the design of a new wooden church was approved. It was built in 1860. On April 1, 1866 Father Jonas Stšelecký held the last Catholic service. In his sermon, he declared his conversion to Orthodoxy and urged his parishioners to follow his example. The church was handed over to the Orthodox in 1866. The Orthodox cleric, the excommunicate A. Petkevičius, also preached a sermon in Lithuanian (J. Stšelecki did not speak Lithuanian).
Eduardas Volteris (1856-1941), who edited the Liturgy of John Chrysostom translated into Lithuanian for the Orthodox in 1886-1887, adapted it to the Lithuanian dialect of Paberžė.
