The hilly landscape is characterized by some peculiarities in geological, hydrographic and architectural view. The subsoil of the Baumberge is formed by a sandstone, which is very popular in the construction industry, and which is bound with lime. This material is of a pale yellow color, is very easy to work with and determines the image of the cities in the whole environment. The tree tops tower over the otherwise flat landscape by up to 100 meters and reach on the Westerberg 187.6 meters in height; whose summit is crowned by the Longinusturm.

The Baumberge are an FFH area with a flora and fauna that is unique for the Münsterland and really beautiful! As an FFH area, they are subject to special protection. A protected species that has found its retreat here is the fire salamander, whose population in the tree mountains is currently under severe threat from the B-Sal fungus. We transfer the spores of this fungus to this area on our hiking boots or the paws of our dogs if we have previously hiked in an area where the fungus is present. In order to protect the beautiful nature of the Baumberge and above all the fire salamander, it is particularly important to stay on the signposted paths when cycling and hiking and not to follow any wild trails. Dogs must be kept on a leash so that they do not leave the paths. Cleaning the soles of hiking boots before a hike in the treetops can help stop the spread of the fungus.
