The Vadstena Castle was originally built by King Gustav Vasa 1545-1555 as a defensive system to protect the country from attacks from Småland and Denmark. But soon the fortress was extended to a princely apartment for the son of a duke Duke Magnus of Östergötland, before the castle was completed in 1620 as a Renaissance castle. Today it is one of the best preserved Renaissance castles in Sweden.
