The cable car to the Sophienalpe

Finally, the cable car to the Sophienalpe was designed as a technical test facility by the manufacturer Georg Sigl, who had already supplied the machinery for the cable car to the Kahlenberg. In 1881 the complex was closed again and removed.

It was a funicular railway
Between 1874 and 1881, there was a cable car at exactly this spot. Affectionately called the "Knöpferlbahn" by the Viennese, it ran from the Rieglerhütte to the Sophienalpe. The passengers sat in open carriage-like cars that had space for four people. The cars were connected to the traction cable with red iron balls, the "Knöpferln". Over a distance of 700 meters, the cable car overcame a height difference of 108 meters and a maximum gradient of 250 ‰. 200 people could be transported up and down the mountain in an hour. The speed was a breathtaking 5.8 kilometers per hour.
