Edam is a city in the Dutch province of North Holland. Together with Volendam, Edam forms the municipality of Edam-Volendam. Edam was created on a dam on the IJe or E, which emptied into the Zuiderzee. Originally Edam was called Yedam, named after the watercourse (the E or Ye). Edam was first mentioned in 1310. The city received city rights in 1357 from Count Willem V of Holland and permission to dig an open connection between Lake Purmer and the Zuiderzee.

Edam is best known for the cheese of the same name. Edam had its heyday in the seventeenth century when it engaged in significant maritime trade across the Texel Loch, including to the Dutch East Indies. There was also a brisk trade in cheese. Edam cheese was traded abroad as early as the fifteenth century.

A good place to start in Edam is Lingerzijde Street. There are listed buildings on both sides of the street. Those who follow my route will pass other listed buildings and other sights.
