An impressive Gräftenhof is the former Hof Schulte Steinhorst. He once had jurisdiction in the peasantry, a horse had to be kept for the princely hunt, and together with Schulze Hobbeling he was obliged to deliver the millstones for the bishop's mill in Wolbeck. The gatehouse from 1764 gives access to the courtyard and provides a view of the gable of the main house (the core of which dates from 1575) with the courtyard bell. And because new farm buildings were built outside the approx. 70x85m courtyard island, the Ringgräfte is still complete. The court chapel was rebuilt in 1865 outside the moats. It was previously connected to the courtyard by a wooden drawbridge.

Farms surrounded like islands by a wide moat – the so-called moat – are typical elements of the cultural and settlement landscape of the Münsterland region. Only large farmers, such as the Schulten or Schulzen farms, could afford a moat to protect their property, for example, from gang raids, and often, in imitation of noble estates, as a prestige object.
