Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1994, the rock sites of Tanum are among the most accomplished artistic expressions of prehistoric art in Northern Europe.

Very numerous and underlined in red to be more visible to ordinary mortals, these thousands of engravings are displayed on large slabs of granite.

They are fascinating because they represent many scenes, but also many humans and animals.

They were created at the beginning of the Bronze Age, more than 2000 years before Christ. These petroglyphs were discovered in the 17th century. Many sites around the museum are visible, and you can easily spend the day exploring.

The rock carvings are from the Bronze Age, around 3000 years old and still very well preserved. For this reason, they have been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. There is a kind of small museum with an attached shop. The rock carvings themselves are freely accessible and are between 500 and 800 meters apart. Houses from that time have been recreated in the outdoor area and events are held regularly.
