Ennis Friary has been the focal point of the city since the 13th century. It served as a Franciscan monastery, seat of the Kings of Thomond, court and prison.

This medieval Franciscan friary was founded in the 14th century by the O’Briens of Thomond, who once ruled much of north Munster. It grew into a large foundation with 600 pupils by 1375. It was the last school of catholic theology to survive the Reformation.
The building has a number of exquisite 15th and 16th century sculptures carved into the local hard limestone which are worth seeing up close.
