The Münstersche Aa flows here from the Aasee and then across the city. Not far from the Aasee, four beeches stand on the right bank as a natural monument. They were planted in the 18th century, so they are around 250 years old.

"... The almost 30 km long Münstersche Aa is a tributary of the Ems.
It rises in northwestern North Rhine-Westphalia about 16 km west of Münster. The source is located west of the town center of Havixbeck on the northeast slope of the Baumberge. The Aa initially flows a few kilometers to the southeast, east past Roxel, then bends north and flows through the 2.3 km long Aasee in Münster.

This is a comparatively shallow body of water and therefore suffers particularly from the phosphate input from fertilizers that enter the lake via the streams on the upper reaches. Phosphates in combination with a strong warming of the water in summer regularly give the people of Münster the dreaded algae plague. In the summer of 2005 there were attempts to improve the water quality of the Aasee and Aa by vaccinating them with precipitants.

After it was fed by many small streams, especially in its upper course - above Münster - it crosses Münster city center below the Aasee, including the university campus between the UB, Juridicum and Fürstenberghaus. Walled up in a narrow concrete channel, a poor trickle ripples therefore, only after heavy rainfall does a picture like the illustration for this article appear. The riverside path between Am Stadtgraben and Bergstr. is an idyllic way through the inner city hustle and bustle.
