A remnant of a wall from 1620 when Lille was under the rule of the Spanish Netherlands. You can see the battlements and the grooves in which the arms of the drawbridge rested. The two arches where the tram lines run are from a later date from the 19th century.

When it was built in 1620, Lille still belonged to the Spanish Netherlands. This gate is then integrated into a new enclosure erected after a recent extension (1617-1621) thus integrating 30 new hectares and pushing the ramparts to the north. The crenellated cornice and the grooves that housed the arms of the drawbridge are still today a reminder of the defensive vocation of this gate.
It was here that the Austrian major presented himself in 1792, with the famous ultimatum of the Duke of Saxe-Teschen, calling on the besieged city to surrender. The two side passages were drilled at the end of the 19th century for the passage of the tram. To the left of the door, the house known as "Old Men" dates from 1624.
