A small pilgrimage church on the climb to Jaizkibel, named after the important pilgrimage site in the province of Caceres, in the Autonomous Community of Extramadura in Spain.

One of the statues of saints in this pretty church (see photo by Barbara + Andreas) could be mistaken for the (pilgrim) apostle James the Elder due to the shell on the robe and hat as well as the pilgrim's staff and calabash.
However, it is Saint Roch. To quote one of our members on this: "It is characteristic of the depiction of Rochus in paintings and as statues that he usually points to a plague boil on his leg; a dog can often be seen at his feet, because according to legend, When he cared for people with the plague, became ill with it himself and withdrew into solitude, they provided him with bread every day." It is a hermitage, dedicated to the Virgin of Guadalupe, who is patron of the city of Hondarribia. The sanctuary dates from the 16th century and every year, on September 8, it is the destination of the procession, the parade which honors the Virgin in a parade which commemorates the victory of 1638 over the French troops. Very nice view near the Sanctuary, which is also the starting point for many hikes.
