The Lainzer Tor is a good starting point for hikes in the Lainzer Tiergarten. It is also very easy to reach by public. There is also a parking lot, but it is usually overcrowded!

The Lainzer Tiergarten - Natural Landscape in Vienna

A last piece of the pristine Vienna Woods – that's the Lainzer Tiergarten, located on the outskirts of the city. For many decades, this special recreational area has been a popular destination for city dwellers, as well as tourists from near and far. Thanks to the unique cultural and natural landscape, the rich flora and fauna, and the cultural-historical exhibitions in the Hermesvilla, the Lainzer Tiergarten offers an ideal combination of relaxation, outdoor experiences, and education.

The Lainzer Tiergarten habitat and its location, size, geology, and climate
The Lainzer Tiergarten is located in the western part of the city of Vienna, in the eastern part of the Vienna Woods. Its total area covers 2,450 hectares – 1,945 hectares of which are forested. The Lainzer Tiergarten's perimeter wall is approximately 22 kilometers long. From a geological point of view, this area can be assigned to the so-called flysch zone; characteristics of this zone include sandstone and marl rocks, a clayey and heavy soil composition, and numerous ditches and streams – just like those found in the Lainzer Tiergarten.

The Lainzer Tiergarten is a popular destination. The area is particularly suitable for walks (especially Lainzer Tor) and hiking. Also for runners or joggers and Nordic Walker the well-paved road network is ideally suited (partially signposted running tracks). The establishment of two nature trails and the opportunity to participate in guided tours and excursions under expert guidance, extends the offer. A visitor center offers changing detail exhibitions on aspects of nature conservation in the park.
