The physicist, astronomer, mathematician and philosopher Gustave Adolphe Hirn (1815-1890) is the great scholar of Colmar. The application of his research into thermodynamics and oil techniques made him one of the pioneers of modern industry. The bronze statue shows the member of the institute on his lectern. The statue was made by Auguste Bartholdi and was dedicated in 1894, just four years after the scientist's death.

Gustave Adolphe Hirn was born on August 21, 1815, in Logelbach, a suburb of Colmar.

Initially a chemist at a Logelbach factory, he researched the functioning of steam engines. Through his work, he succeeded in determining the mechanical equivalent of a calorie.
