The canal is now known for its bicycle-friendly character in the beautiful setting of the green polders and the crooked Marilandica poplars. Many a fisherman has also looked eagerly at his/her rod here and during the harshest winters the sports enthusiasts can get out their skates for the Zwinstedentocht or Brugge-Sluis-Brugge. But however inviting it may be on a warm day, swimming is not allowed here. Except on one day in the middle of August, because then one of the oldest open-air long-distance swimming competitions is held: Damme - Brugge (5 km). The canal attracts many water birds. And whoever looks for a quiet spot has a chance to encounter one of Damme's most famous fishermen: the blue heron.

The Damse Vaart is a canal in the north of the Belgian province of West Flanders. It is approximately 15 km long. The canal connects the provincial capital of Bruges with the Dutch border town of Sluis. The excavation work for this canal started after approval by Napoleon (1810), hence the name Napoleonvaart.
