The Madonnina del Porto is a sacred statue located in the port of Messina who represents the Madonna della Lettera, the patron saint of Messina, whose devotion is rooted in ancient legends and popular traditions.

The Madonnina del Porto represents an important reference point for sailors entering and leaving the port of Messina, so much so that it is considered a religious and cultural symbol of the city itself. The statue dates back to the mid-19th century and was donated to Messina by General Ferdinando Loffredo, commander of the Bourbon army, at the end of the siege of 1848-1849. About 60 metres high, the monumental column is surmounted by a gilded statue of the Virgin Mary holding the letter. At the base of the stele, there is the Latin inscription ‘Vos et ipsam civitatem benedicimus’ (We bless you and the city), a phrase that sanctions Mary’s perpetual blessing on Messina.
