Located in the immediate vicinity of the spa town of Bad Bevensen, approx. 30 km southeast of the old Hanseatic city of Lüneburg and mentioned for the first time in historical terms in 1228, the Evangelical Women's Monastery in Medingen looks back on a long and eventful history.
It is one of the six "Lüneburg monasteries" that have been preserved since the Middle Ages. The old brewhouse, built in brick, gives an idea of what it was like in Medingen at the time.
What is special is the shape of its early classicist main building, which was built in an uncompromisingly modern form after a devastating fire in the old monastery complex from 1782. It is the only ensemble of this kind in Northern Germany. The broad façade of the symmetrical structure, which is based on an H-shape, is overlooked in the middle by the mighty bell tower of the integrated monastery church. The domed central building is still used regularly for church services, weddings, baptisms and cultural events. Its early classicist interior has a special atmosphere. On guided tours, visitors can immerse themselves in the history of a place that has long been inhabited and shaped by women.
