A burial mound or burial mound (Latin tumulus, plural tumuli; Greek τύμβος tymbos) is a stretched, round or oval mound. It contains tombs or other prehistoric monuments. The graves can be body burials (possibly in a tree coffin), urn graves or scattered cremation. The mounds may have internals, e.g. B. from concentric circles, buildings (burial mounds of Trappendal), stone burial chambers or stone chests.
Stone hills are called Cairns in English, Tumuli de pierres in French and Gravrøser in Denmark. The prehistoric burial mounds of North America are known as mounds, the burial mounds characteristic of eastern Lower Saxony are known as humpback graves.
Burial mounds cannot be limited either in terms of time or region. In Europe they exist regionally almost consistently from the Stone Age through the Bronze Age to the Iron Age and the Middle Ages. Written cultures also knew the burial mound. In ancient times, the Greeks raised burial mounds for their heroes, as did the Etruscans and the Romans. In the Mediterranean they were called tumuli, in Eastern Europe kurgans.
