It is likely that the hill where Tettnang now stands was already developed before its first documented mention in 882. The first church in the village was probably a wooden church, dedicated to Saint Gallus, one of the missionaries at Lake Constance. This wooden church was later replaced by a Romanesque stone church with a walled cemetery.
