Unfortunately, the majority of visitors can be chauffeured up by car, so it's always quite crowded, especially when the weather is nice.
The name "Gergeti" (Georgian გერგეტი) comes from the disappeared Georgian village of Gergeti on the right bank of the Tergi River opposite the center of the region, the city of Stepantsminda. The Church of Sameba was built in Gergeti and still bears the name of this former village.

The Gergeti Trinity Church (2200m) has played an important role in the history of the Georgian Church and is today an important place of pilgrimage. The view over the valley of Stepantsminda and to Prometheus Mount Kazbek (5047m) is magnificent.

The small mountain church of Gergeti was built at the foot of the Kazbek. It is one of the main attractions in Georgia and has perhaps the best view of the Prometheus Mount Kazbek. The history of the Georgian Orthodox church complex in the Mtskheta-Mtianeti region dates back to the 14th century.
Framed by the mountain giants of the Greater Caucasus, at an altitude of 2,180 meters, there is a wonderful panoramic view down to Stepantsminda and the surrounding mountains. This view alone is worth the trip. The church itself is one of the most important religious buildings in Georgia and functions as a place of pilgrimage.
It was built in the 14th century, also to convince the mountain tribes of Georgia, who were still unfamiliar with Christianity. They continued to follow their pagan customs.
