    Chapel 'Maria, hulp der Christenen' ('Auxilium Christianorum'). The chapel is clearly used as a starting point for the Via Coriovallum, the pilgrimage route in South Limburg and "springboard to Santiago de Compostela and Rome" as the site describes the pilgrimage route, see viacoriovallum.nl

    The signpost tells you that you are 3.9 kilometers from the Refugio Houthem - St. Gerlach. That is the first Refugio in the Netherlands (where pilgrims can stay) and it is located right next to the Sint Gerlachuskerk and the shrine of Gerlachus.

    Anyone who walks to Santiago de Compostella from here has more than 2200 kilometers to go. Easy. Right?

      The chapel is located on the very edge of Klein Haasdal, at the intersection of Klein-Haasdal and Klein Haasdallerweg. A wide sidewalk with concrete posts* protects the chapel, which is marked by greenery.
      * Red posts now protect it, which certainly hasn't improved its appearance!!

      Exterior
      The chapel has a rectangular footprint. The facade widens towards the top and extends beyond the rest of the chapel. The gable roof is covered with tiles. A simple cross stands on the front facade. Above the entrance is a stone plaque with the inscription: Ave Maria. The round-arched entrance is closed off by an iron gate and completely protected by plexiglass. On either side are two windows with round arches in bluestone frames.

      Interior
      The chapel's interior is constructed of exposed brickwork. It has four colorful stained-glass windows, which unfortunately are difficult to admire due to the protective plexiglass covering the entrance. A statue of the Virgin Mary stands on an altar.

        Mariakapel Klein Haasdal

        The chapel was built in 1954 and consecrated on July 4th of that year by Mgr. Bruls. The reason for its construction was the fact that the sacramental procession passed by every three years, and an altar of repose had to be built each time. The plans for the chapel were drawn up by architect Kemps* of Heerlen.
