Steinau an der Straße is located in the Main-Kinzig district in the southeast of the state of Hesse. The addition "on the street" refers to the Via Regia, the old trade route from Frankfurt am Main to Leipzig, and serves to distinguish it from other places of the same name. Steinau is also called Brothers Grimm City because they spent part of their youth here.

The complex emerged from a medieval castle, but nothing is known about its appearance. It could be the foundation of the Fulda Abbey. At the time of written evidence at the end of the 13th century, the castle is initially in allodial possession of the Counts of Rieneck. With the marriage between Ulrich I. von Hanau and Elisabeth von Rieneck, the town and castle passed to the Lords of Hanau as dowry. The castle was used later, like the castles in Schwarzenfels and Windecken, as the widow's seat of Hanau countesses.
