Swamps, bogs and other wetlands are ecologically important natural habitats. Swamps are so important that they have been included in the Helmi Habitats Program. Under the aegis of the Ministry of the Environment, it aims to “bolster biodiversity” and “protect the basic ecosystem services” provided by nature, as well as help combat climate change. The Finnish Parliament allocated an additional EUR 100 million for nature conservation in 2020, of which EUR 42 million was used for the Helmi program. Helmi means “pearl” in Finnish.
