The M47 Patton was a Cold War era Main Battle Tank of US production. The official designation of the Army Department was: "M47 Medium Tank - 90 mm Gun". The vehicle was named after General George S. Patton, commander of the 3rd US Army during World War II.

In the US Army, the M47, which was only used in small numbers, was replaced by the M48 and M48A1.[2] The M47 was also used in the newly formed Bundeswehr. It introduced the M48A2C as a successor model, and a few years later the Austrian Armed Forces converted to the M60 main battle tank. At the beginning of the Bosnian War in 1992, the M47 was still used sporadically by the Bosnian-Herzegovinian armed forces, today the tank is no longer used.
