The Elisabethfehn Canal connects the Ems with the Hunte from Oldenburg via the Leda. The canal is an inland waterway and there are a number of pleasure boats sailing along it. The bike path along the canal is wonderfully paved and straight. On Ascension Day, Germany's longest flea market takes place here, with around 2,000 tables set up along the canal.

The Elisabethfehn Canal is one of the so-called other inland waterways of the federal government and is the north-western part of the former Hunte-Ems Canal, which as a shipping canal connected the Hunte from Oldenburg to the Ems via the Leda.

As beautiful as the canal is, it is annoying to cycle along it - if, yes, if you drive on the wrong side.
In my opinion, the "wrong side" is the one on which you drive on bumpy pavement directly along the shore, that may look idyllic - comfortable cycling is better recommended on the opposite, paved side. Short-distance cyclists will also be happy on the bumpy route, because the canal is really beautiful - and the best thing is - it will remain navigable.

A seemingly endless canal through the elongated Fehnkolonie Elisabethfehn can be navigated differently and romantically on both sides of the canal. As almost everywhere in the fen colonies in the northwest, there is a good and a moderately or not at all developed canal side along the canals. As in Cologne on the Rhine, there is also a "Schäl Sick", so to speak, an ugly side.
In ancient times, the respective prosperity as well as the length of residence played a role on which side of the canal you lived. Well developed - older and richer; poorly developed - younger and poorer. Paradoxically, today people usually live more quietly, and therefore better, on the poorly developed side.

The Elisabethfehn Canal, a unique section of the Hunte-Ems Canal, was completed in 1893. With a length of 15 km, it connects the Küstenkanal in Kampe with the Leda River in Osterhausen. The canal is 18 m wide, up to 1.50 m deep, and features seven drawbridges and four operable locks. It is not only the last intact fen canal in Germany, but also a listed monument.

Today, the canal is primarily used by pleasure boats and offers excellent opportunities for cycling along its banks. Here, you can discover the fascinating traces of the fen culture, which has its origins in the raised bog culture. The drainage of the land led to the construction of canals, along which the typical fen houses were built.

For further information about the significance of the canal, the fen culture, and the moors, a visit to the Moor and Fehn Museum in Elisabethfehn, run by the local and beautification association, is worthwhile.

On the Elisabeth Fehn Canal it is very easy to drive even in wind and heat because the vegetation in the bank area is good for cycling.
Apart from that, very nice route that is really fun.

This is unfortunately true, that, I call it Friesen cobblestone pavement is indeed not very comfortable. Since, as in my case, nature takes precedence, it can "sit out" on short stretches.

                    story
Today's Elisabethfehn Canal was built from 1855 to 1893 and leads from the coastal canal near Kampe via Kamperfehn, Reekenfeld, Elisabethfehn to the Sagter Ems near the Roggenberg farmers. The eastern part of the Hunte-Ems Canal has been part of the coastal canal since 1935, which at Dörpen is connected to the Ems, which has been expanded into the Dortmund-Ems Canal. Today the Waterways and Shipping Office Ems-Nordsee, which belongs to the General Directorate for Waterways and Shipping, is responsible.
When it was built, today's Elisabethfehn Canal also served as a fen canal to develop the hitherto deserted moorland. The first colonies of Moslesfehn (1871) and Elisabethfehn (1880) emerged during construction. The Cloppenburg – Ocholt railway crosses the Elisabethfehn Canal in Elisabethfehn. From the opening to the end of the First World War, the sometimes brisk shipping traffic served the peat industry. After the Second World War, commercial shipping came to an almost complete standstill. Since the late 1960s, the canal has been used almost exclusively for recreational shipping. In the past few years the tourist use has decreased and there were only around 1000 people smuggled each year.
In 2012, the operation of the Elisabethfehn Canal was in danger because the Osterhausen lock had become dilapidated and the federal government had cut the funds for renovation or new construction. The Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Development announced that the canal near Barßel should be closed and no longer maintained as a federal waterway. The citizens' initiative Rettet den Elisabethfehnkanal e. V. has been campaigning for the preservation of the canal ever since.

I also passed the Elisabethfehn Canal during my lap along the fen route.
