The patronage of this chapel, “Visitation of Mary (or in another spelling: Visitation of Mary), refers to one of the many memorial or feast days in honor of the Mother of God Mary. Depending on the region or denomination, it is celebrated on different days, on May 31st or July 2nd.
The term “Chapelle de la Visitation” used here in French makes the festival much more understandable. The old German term “Visitation” in the Bible, which has negative connotations in our current expression or way of thinking, simply refers to Mary's visit to her relative Elizabeth.
She is married to Zacharias and the marriage remained childless, which was a social stigma at the time. But now – despite her advanced age – she became pregnant, which the Archangel Gabriel told Mary when he brought her the message that she herself should give birth to the Son of God, Jesus.
The son of Elizabeth and Zechariah is John, nicknamed “the Baptist”, who is considered the forerunner of Jesus Christ.
