A 12th century two-part castle. The castle hill was formed from the excavation of the castle moat. This type of construction is called Motte, which is French and means hill. The Hardtburg Castle is part of the Roman Canal hiking trail, because a lot of stone material from the ancient Roman Canal was used here too. This was easier in the Middle Ages than breaking and fetching new stones. Unfortunately, the main castle is currently closed due to dilapidation. The view from the outside is still worthwhile and the district forester's office is located in the outer bailey.

The Römerkanal hiking trail is a hiking trail along the Eifel water pipeline built by the Romans in the 1st century AD.
It runs from Nettersheim via Kall, Rheinbach, Brühl and Hürth to Cologne-Sülz and is 116 km long.
The hiking trail was opened in 1988 to mark the centenary of the Eifel Association and was thoroughly modernized in 2012.

The two-part castle, surrounded by moats, dates from the early 12th century. It is a motte (French motte: hill), because the main castle hill was built up with the excavation of the artificially created moat. In the main castle is the square residential tower, which is surrounded by a double ring of walls and was previously only accessible from the outer bailey through a system of enclosures.
In the Hardtburg we also find remains of building material that clearly show the origin of the "Roman canal quarry". However, there are only very few fragments of travertine that we can identify here: a single piece is built into the south corner of the residential tower at about eye level. The clear layering of the material makes the origin clear.
Hikers who are accompanied by their children can organize a little search game here: perhaps the children hiking with them will be able to find more pieces of travertine in the masonry of the Hardtburg tower. Have fun discussing! Source: roemerkanal.de/bauwerk
